The Little Book of Prayers

The perfect gift for seekers, the curious, and the spiritually hungry, The Little Book of Prayers now has a stunning new cover and a more prayer book–like format. Gathered from holy books and prayer books, from songs and spirituals, spoken traditions and poets, it is an unexpectedly approachable collection of common and uncommon prayers from around the world. The entries, one per page or spread, are chosen for their depth of feeling, beauty of expression, spiritual intensity, and sense of the universal. The book is organized into broad categories of praise, entreaty, contemplation, mourning, and grace; and two indexes—one by authorship, and the other by topic—make it immediately accessible. There are familiar prayers, like the Lord’s Prayer and 23rd Psalm, which, placed in new context, shine with a renewed beauty and wisdom. You’ll find prayers unfamiliar to many in the West, such as the “Opener” from the Koran or the four vows of the Boddhisattva, chanted every evening in Zen monasteries around the world. And the surprising—from the “Prayer of the Unknown Confederate Soldier” to the blues of Lightnin’ Hopkins to the poetry of Rumi. God help us to live slowly: To move simply: To look softly: To allow emptiness: To let the heart create for us. Amen. —Michael Leunig You, whose day it is, make it beautiful. Get out your rainbow colors, so it will be beautiful. —Nootka Song

Spiritual Modalities

A bold recasting of prayer as a rhetorical art, Spiritual Modalities investigates situations, strategies, and performative modes of discourse directed to divine audiences. Examining how prayer “works,” Spiritual Modalities reads prayer’s situations and strategies, its characteristic acts and attitudes, to advance an understanding of prayer as a basic expression of our rhetorical capacities for communication and communion. This groundbreaking analysis demonstrates how prayer draws on fundamental capacities to engage other beings rhetorically to argue that we are never more human than when we address the nonhuman. Spiritual Modalities is notable in its aim to articulate a critical rhetoric of prayer in a secular idiom. It draws on contributions to rhetorical theory from Kenneth Burke along with a broad range of classical and contemporary perspectives on audience, address, speech acts, and modes of performance. The book also takes a multicultural and multimodal approach to prayer as rhetorical performance. The texts and practices of prayer represented range across religious traditions and historical eras and include both verbal and physical modes of divine address. The book will be of interest to scholars researching religious language, Burkean approaches to discourse, practices of memory, and media studies.

The Compassionate Life

How can compassion, a trait hardwired into our nervous system and waiting to be awakened, transform our lives and the world at large? Marc Barasch provides up-to-the-minute research to timeless spiritual truths, and weaves a stirring, unforgettable story of the search for kindness in a world that clearly needs it. With unfailing curiosity, Barasch poses vital questions: What can we learn from exceptionally empathetic people? Can we increase our compassion quotient with practice? What if the great driving force of our evolution were actually "survival of the kindest?" He comes up with challenging, ultimately inspiring answers. With encounters as diverse as observations of compassion amongst bonobo chimpanzees, to the story of a man who forgives his daughters killer, to teenage Palestinian and Israeli girls trying to wage peace, Barasch blends hard science and popular culture with his own hip, engaging narrative style to create a smart, provocative argument that a simple shift in consciousness changes pretty much everything.

At this unprecedented time in planetary and cosmic history, you are needed. You are whole and sufficient, gifted and powerful. You are enough, and you are called to go out into the world and be enough. Let Reviving Our Indigenous Souls remind you of the former and guide you through the latter.

Encounters for Change

Weaving together insights from social psychology, theology, and experiences of interfaith religious leaders, Dagmar Grefe develops practical strategies that support interreligious contact at a grassroots level. She shows that by working together, religious communities can more effectively address global and local problems that all people face: poverty, environmental destruction, and armed conflict. Grefe describes interreligious cooperation at work in local communities. She develops tools that equip religious leaders with the interreligious competence needed for spiritual care and counseling with individual persons in crisis. Cooperation is not only effective in the care for communities and persons in crisis, it also heals distant and strained interreligious relationships. In the process of working together, perceptions of each other can transform.

Lost in the Long White Cloud

Lost in the Long White Cloud is both creation story and vision quest of a healer. Prolific author, David H. Rosen, was the child of creative parents. Free to explore, the sometimes unattended toddler turned into a smart "good boy" with a "bad boy's" energy for funny, sad and scary escapades. The future author of The Tao of Elvis so successfully impersonated Elvis in junior high, that his gyrations led to "girls, girls, girls" -- and even a marriage proposal from one enamored adolescent's parents! Rosen's story takes us all over the map. In Greece, David lays awake under the stars with lovely Lolly and decides to become a fisherman. He pays a Parisian prostitute just to listen to her story, which will empower the future Jungian psychiatrist to help a call girl transform herself into a therapist for sexually-abused children. In Denmark, Rosen discovers that the well-provided-for citizens were strangely prone to suicide. Later, Dr Rosen would coin the term "egocide" and publish the magnum opus, Transforming Depression. US propaganda drives David to experience Russia for himself. The ensuing trip is an international "Twist and Shout" dance party in the train aisles! Lost in the Long White Cloud is a memoir turned cinematic adventure story by the astonishingly honest, good-hearted and erudite David H. Rosen, MD.

The Blessing Candles

People all over the world celebrate rituals to mark solstices and equinoxes, births, personal and religious milestones, marriages, anniversaries and death. Rituals allow us to remember our past, hope for the future, live in the now and mark important events, no matter how painful, as celebrations of human becoming and faith. Gaynell Bordes Cronin and Jack Rathschmidt invite us to light two candles and use simple prayer-celebrations before or after meals to uncover the wonder and wisdom of faith in family or group gatherings. Each prayer-celebration includes a gathering prayer, the lighting of two candles, a reading and a prayerful response to it, and a sending prayer. The simple rituals can be used as blessings for everyday and special occasions and for special needs.
